Oversized Transportation & Logistics Challenge

Manufacturing a 12-Meter Tube Sheet Is Only Half the Challenge

τα τελευταία νέα της εταιρείας για Oversized Transportation & Logistics Challenge 0

For a component with a diameter of 12,000 mm, transportation can be as challenging as manufacturing.

The overall size of the 304L tube sheet creates significant logistical constraints. A conventional export shipment cannot simply be arranged after the component has been completed. Transportation requirements need to be considered during the engineering and manufacturing planning stage.

For this project, the tube sheet's 12-meter diameter required careful consideration of:

  • Transportation route

  • Loading and unloading

  • Port handling

  • Lifting and securing

  • Container or breakbulk shipping options

  • Oversized cargo requirements

  • Road transportation restrictions

  • Final delivery to the customer's project site

The objective was to ensure that the manufacturing solution was not only technically feasible, but also logistically feasible.

Why a 12-Meter Diameter Creates a Logistics Challenge

A 12-meter diameter means the component extends far beyond the dimensions of conventional containerized cargo.

The diameter alone is approximately:

12,000 mm = 12 meters = 39.4 feet

This creates challenges at multiple stages of the logistics chain.

1. Inland Transportation

Moving an oversized circular component from the manufacturing facility to the port requires route planning.

Potential restrictions can include:

  • Road width

  • Bridge clearance

  • Overhead structures

  • Turning radius

  • Road weight limitations

  • Traffic restrictions

  • Special transportation permits

  • Escort requirements

Therefore, the transportation route needs to be evaluated before shipment.

2. Lifting and Handling

A large tube sheet requires appropriate lifting and handling arrangements.

The lifting plan needs to consider:

  • Component weight

  • Center of gravity

  • Lifting points

  • Crane capacity

  • Sling configuration

  • Loading sequence

  • Port handling requirements

Improper handling can create deformation or surface damage even when the component itself has been manufactured correctly.

3. Port Operations

Oversized cargo also creates additional requirements at the export port.

Depending on the final shipping method and destination, the cargo may need to be handled as breakbulk, project cargo or other specialized oversized cargo, rather than standard containerized cargo.

The actual shipping method should be determined according to the final dimensions, weight, destination port, vessel availability and local regulations.

Transportation Planning Starts Before Manufacturing

One of the key lessons from this project is that manufacturing and logistics cannot be treated as completely separate processes.

For a conventional component, transportation can often be arranged after production.

For a 12-meter component, this approach creates unnecessary risk.

Instead, the project should be evaluated through an integrated process:

Customer Drawing

Material & Manufacturing Method

12-Meter Component Manufacturing

Dimensional & Quality Control

Lifting & Loading Plan

Inland Transportation

Port Handling

International Shipping

Customer Site Delivery

This integrated approach allows the manufacturer to identify logistical constraints before the product is completed.

Manufacturing With Transportation in Mind

For oversized components, manufacturing decisions can influence transportation cost and feasibility.

The key questions are not only:

"Can we manufacture this component?"

but also:

"How will it leave the factory?"

"How will it reach the port?"

"How will it be loaded onto the vessel?"

"How will the customer receive it at the destination?"

For international B2B projects, particularly large industrial equipment projects, these questions can have a direct impact on the total project cost.

This is why our approach combines:

Manufacturing Engineering + Machining + Quality Control + Logistics Planning + Cost Control.

A Complete Solution for Large Custom Components

The 12-meter 304L tube sheet project demonstrates that manufacturing capability is not determined only by the size of the machine or workshop.

For an oversized component, successful delivery requires coordination across the entire supply chain.

At JIANGSU HUI XUAN NEW ENERGY EQUIPMENT CO., LTD., our capabilities include:

  • Forging

  • Large-component manufacturing

  • Precision machining

  • Material control

  • Dimensional inspection

  • Quality control

  • Cost optimization

  • Export packaging

  • Oversized cargo coordination

Our goal is to provide customers with a complete manufacturing solution rather than simply supplying a finished metal component.

For a 12-meter-diameter 304L tube sheet, the challenge starts with manufacturing—but it does not end until the component can be safely delivered to the customer's project site.
